MODEL 231 TRANSFER CASE
Remove the speedometer adapter (D).
Remove the O-ring (E) from the adapter.
Remove the seal retainer (F) and the oil seal (G)
from the adapter.
I n s p e c t the s p e e d o m e t e r driven g e a r (H).
Replace the gear if worn or damaged.

Lubricate the replacement O-ring, oil seal and
s e a l retainer with t r a n s m i s s i o n fluid. T h e n
install them in the adapter.
Install the driven gear in the adapter and install
the adapter in the transfer c a s e .
Install the adapter retainer bracket. Tighten the
bracket bolt securely.
Connect the speedometer cable to the adapter.
TRANSFER CASE FLUID
The fluid recommended for u s e in the Model
231 transfer c a s e is M e r c o n ® automatic trans-
mission fluid.
TRANSFER CASE REM0¥AL
Raise and support the vehicle.
Drain the transfer c a s e fluid.
Mark the front and rear propeller shaft yokes for
assembly reference.
Disconnect the rear propeller shaft at the trans-
fer c a s e yoke.
Disconnect the speedometer cable and the
vent and vacuum hoses from the transfer c a s e .
Mark or tag the hoses for assembly reference.
Support the transfer c a s e with a jack stand.
Remove the rear crossmember/skidplate.
Disconnect the front propeller shaft at the trans-
fer c a s e yoke.
Disconnect the range lever linkage rod from the
transfer c a s e shift lever or range lever.
Support the transfer c a s e with a transmission
jack.
R e m o v e the transfer c a s e - t o - t r a n s m i s s i o n
attaching nuts.
