STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
STEERING COLUMN SERVICE
Remove the compressor tool.
NOTE: When the steering shaft snap ring is
removed, the shaft is free in the column. Do not
allow the shaft to fall out during disassembly.
Secure the shaft to the lower end of the column
with tape until the shaft is removed.
Remove the lockplate (3), canceling cam (4),
upper bearing preload spring (5) and thrust
washer (6) from the shaft. Remove the horn
button components (A) from the canceling cam.

Remove the hazard warning switch knob. Press
the knob inward and turn it counterclockwise to
remove it.
Remove the turn signal/wiper lever by pulling it
straight out of the column.
Remove the protective cover(s) from the column
harness.
Disconnect the turn signal switch wire harness
connector (7) from the the column jacket. Tape
the harness (A) to prevent snagging during
removal.
Attach a fish wire to the turn signal switch
harness and tape the harness (A) to prevent
snagging during removal.

On column shift models, remove the screws
attaching the shift indicator cover to the upper
housing and remove the cover. Then remove
the screw attaching the shift indicator lamp
bracket but do not remove the bracket at this
time.
Remove the tilt control lever.
