Stall Speed Too L o w
If maximum obtainable engine speed was 1650
rpm or less, the torque converter stator-clutch
is not holding. The condition should be con-
firmed by road testing. A slipping stator clutch
will cause poor low speed acceleration. Howev-
er, highway performance may not be affected.
Stall Speed Normal
If stall speed is normal, road test the vehicle to
confirm converter performance. If road testing
reveals that low speed acceleration is normal,
but an abnormally high throttle opening is re-
quired to maintain highway speeds, the con-
verter clutch is seized.
Noise
Fluid flow through the converter during a stall
test may generate a whining noise. This is nor-
mal. However, loud metallic noises indicate in-
ternal damage. Operate the vehicle on a hoist,
at light throttle in Drive and Neutral, to verify
that this type of noise is actually from the
converter.
CONVERTER HOUSING FLUID LEAK
DIAGNOSIS
Two facts must be established when diagnos-
ing converter housing leaks. First, it must be
verified that a leak condition actually exists, and
secondly, the real source of the leak must be
determined. Suspected converter housing fluid
leaks may not be leaks at all. They may be the
result of fluid spilled during transmission top-off
or refill.
Converter housing area leaks may have several
sources. The leak source should be identified
before attempting repair. The paths followed by
various types of fluid leaks are described
below.
84083
Leak Paths
Oil Pump Seal (1) — leaks past the seal lip
tend to move along the drive hub and onto
the rear of the converter housing (2). Howev-
er, if total seal failure occurs, fluid will be
deposited inside the converter housing only,
near the outside diameter of the housing.
Oil Pump Body
leaks past the pump
body follow the same path as an oil pump
seal leak or fluid may travel down the pump
face into the converter housing.
• Oil Pump-to-Case Bolt (3) — leaks past any
one of these bolts are deposited on the in-
side of the converter housing only and not on
the converter itself.
