Install and tighten the adjuster plug locknut (20)
to 115 N-m (85 ft-lbs) torque. Do not allow the
adjuster plug to rotate when tightening the
locknut.
Turn the stub shaft clockwise to the stop. Then
turn the stub shaft back 1/4 turn.
Install a 12-point deep socket (M) on the stub
shaft splines.
Measure torque required to turn the stub shaft
with an inch-pound torque wrench having a
maximum capacity of 6 N-m (50 in-lbs). Take the
reading with the beam of the torque wrench at or
near the vertical position (N) while turning the
stub shaft at an even rate.

Torque required to turn the stub shaft should be
from 0.45 to 1.13 N-m (4 to 10 in-lbs).
If torque is above or below specified, adjust
worm bearing preload by loosening or tightening
the adjuster plug as needed.
NOTE: If preload is incorrect, the adjuster plug
may have turned when the locknut was installed
or tightened. Or the gear may be assembled
incorrectly, or the wormshaft thrust bearings and
races may be worn or damaged. Check and
correct as necessary before proceeding.
If turning torque is within specifications, remove
the socket and torque wrench.
