Attention: Workshop, Parts Department
DRIVE SHAFT BOOTS
This I.S. Note is issued to emphasize the special precautions needed in the care and handling of
the front axle drive shaft rubber boots during repair or replacement.
• Care should be taken when removing or replacing the drive shaft rubber boots. These boots are
relatively fragile and precautions should be taken to avoid damage.
• Take care not to drop the drive shafts on the boots. Although no apparent damage is observed,
internal damage could result in eventual rupture.
• Use care when working around the front axle drive shafts to avoid any contact with the boots.
Cover the boots with rags anytime when working in this area.
• When installing new boots do not use any sharp object to remove the protective covering from
the boots.
• When replacing the boots thoroughly clean all components with mineral spirits.
NOTE: On Renault models, do not allow any mineral spirits to come in contact with the trunion bearing.
• Inspect all metal parts of the drive shafts for burrs or sharp edges. Dress any burrs or sharp edges
and polish them with crocus cloth. Be sure to clean the dressed areas with mineral spirits.
Any burr or sharp edge could result in a boot rupture.
• Always use the prescribed tools when removing or replacing the drive shaft boots (see appropriate
M.R.).
• Replacement boots are packaged with new retaining clips. Never use the old retaining clips when
replacing the boots.
• Be sure to fill the boot with the specified lubricant to prevent the boot from collapsing.
Bleed any air from the boot bellows before installing retaining clips.
