Valve Service
The valve (A) is serviced as an assembly only.
It is not a repairable component and must be
replaced if a malfunction occurs.
The valve is located on the left fender panel just
below the master cylinder.

Valve Operation
The valve contains a pressure differential piston
and a plunger-type electrical switch. The valve
is connected to the front and rear brake sys-
tems. The switch is connected to the brake
warning light.
A pressure differential of 483 to 2 068 kPa (70
to 300 psi) between the front and rear systems
will trigger piston operation.
If a fluid pressure drop occurs in the front or
rear brake system, pressure from the function-
ing system moves the piston to the low pres-
sure side. The piston then closes off the low
pressure side diverting all fluid pressure to the
functioning system. The piston will remain at
the low pressure side until the malfunction is
corrected.
The electrical switch is actuated by the differen-
tial piston. Movement of the piston in either di-
rection will press the switch plunger upward
closing the circuit to the brake warning light.
The differential piston will reset automatically
after correcting a malfunction. Valve hold-off
tools are not required in order to bleed the
brakes.
BRAKE BLEEDING
The brake hydraulic system must be bled when
diagnosis indicates air has entered the system.
Brake bleeding is also required whenever a
brakeline has been disconnected or a system
hydraulic component has been removed for
service.
System contamination requires that the entire
system be flushed with clean brake fluid. Con-
tinue flushing until only clear, clean brake fluid
is bled from the calipers and wheel cylinders.
Use
JEEP
brake fluid or an equivalent fluid with
the SAE J 1703F or DOT 3 or 4 rating.
The pressure differential piston is actuated by a
pressure drop in the front or rear brake system.
