REAR AXLE
STANDARD DIFFERENTIAL OVERHAUL
Differential Bearing Preload Adjustment
NOTE: Before installing the differential, the dif-
ferential bearings must be preloaded to com-
pensate for heat and loads during operation.
Install the differential bearing shim packs on the
case.
Add one additional 0.10 mm (0.004 in) shim to
each shim pack.
Install the differential bearings with tools J 8092
and J 21784.
Differential Installation
Lightly lubricate the differential bearings, cups,
gears and thrust washers with axle lubricant.
Install the bearing cups on the differential
bearings.
Install the differential in the axle housing. Tap
the outer edges of the differential bearing cups
(5) with a rawhide mallet to seat them in the
housing.
Install the differential bearing caps. Tighten the
cap bolts to 77 N*m (57 ft-lbs) torque.
Recheck ring gear backlash to verify that it has
not changed.
Install the axle housing cover. Tighten the cover
bolts to 19 Mm (170 in-lbs) torque.
Refill the axle with 2.1 liters (2.5 pints) of J E E P
axle lubricant, or an equivalent SAE 75W-90,
API Grade GL 5 gear lubricant.
