BA 10/5 MANUAL TRANSMISSION
OVERHAUL
Remove the bolts (K) and s c r e w s (C) from the
c a s e and rear bearing retainer.
R e m o v e the right side c a s e half (82) and remove
the cluster gear (40).
Remove the cluster gear front bearing (38).
Install the required preload shim (39) on the gear
and reinstall the front bearing. However, do not
reinstall the cluster gear assembly at this time.
N O T E : T h e beveled side of the preload shim
(39) f a c e s the cluster gear a s shown in the
illustration.

Install the bearing race (9) on the mainshaft rear
bearing. T h e n install the rear bearing retainer
(8), reverse gear (7) and reverse gear nut (5)
and washer (6) (if equipped) on the mainshaft
(20).
N O T E : T h e Torx s c r e w hole in the rear bearing
r e t a i n e r (8) is c o u n t e r s u n k . B e s u r e the
countersunk side of the retainer is facing out and
toward the rear of the c a s e .

Tighten the reverse gear nut (5) to 6 5
N-m
(48 ft-lbs) torque and stake it in place at the two
small notches in the mainshaft. U s e a suitable
size 12-point socket or spare yoke to hold the
mainshaft while tightening the nut.
Front Case
Assembly
Assemble and install the mainshaft and input
shaft in the front c a s e . B e sure the shift forks are
fully engaged in the synchronizers.
Install the cluster gear assembly in the front
c a s e .
Install the alignment dowels (H and 77) in the
front c a s e if not installed previously.
Apply J e e p silicone s e a l e r to the
mounting
surfaces of the front c a s e halves and to the
threads of the c a s e and rear bearing retainer
attaching bolts.
Align and mount the right c a s e half (82) on the
left c a s e half (78).
