STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
STEERING COLUMN SERVICE
Remove the retainer plate (31). Tip the upper
end of the plate rearward and turn the plate
counterclockwise to remove it.
On column shift models, remove the shift tube
wave washer and spring and remove the shift
bowl from the column jacket.
On floor shift models, remove the key release
lever (32) and spring (33) from the housing (34).

C A U T I O N : Be sure to preserve the energy
absorbing features of the steering column. Use
only the specified screws, bolts and nuts and
tighten them to specified torque during
reassembly. Incorrect size or length fasteners
can prevent the column from compressing
under impact. The bolts and nuts that attach the
column mounting bracket to the column and
instrument panel must be tightened to the
correct torque to maintain the breakaway
capability of the bracket.
Lubricate all of the bearing, friction and thrust
surfaces with chassis grease.
