CYLINDER BLOCK
JUS
DISASSEMBLY
Inspect the c a m lobes for wear.
Inspect the bearing journals for uneven w e a r
pattern or finish.
Inspect the bearings for wear.
Inspect the distributor drive gear for wear.
N O T E : If the camshaft (D) a p p e a r s to h a v e
been rubbing against the timing c a s e cover,
examine the oil pressure relief holes in the rear
c a m journal to e n s u r e that they are free of
debris.
OIL PAN REMOVAL
R e m o v e the oil pan.

R e m o v e the g a s k e t s .
R e m o v e the s e a l s .
Thoroughly c l e a n the pan and engine block
gasket s u r f a c e s .
OIL PUMP REMOVAL
T h e positive-displacement, gear-type oil pump
is driven by the distributor shaft, which is driven
by a gear on the camshaft.
Oil is siphoned into the pump through a n inlet
tube and strainer a s s e m b l y that is p r e s s e d into
the pump body.
T h e p u m p i n c o r p o r a t e s a
n o n - a d j u s t a b l e
pressure relief valve to limit maximum p r e s s u r e
to 75 psi (517 k P a ) .
In the relief position, the valve permits oil to
bypass through a p a s s a g e in the pump body to
the inlet side of the pump.
N O T E : Replacement or removal of the oil pump
will not affect the distributor timing b e c a u s e the
distributor drive gear remains in m e s h with the
camshaft gear.
R e m o v e the oil pump a s s e m b l y and g a s k e t from
the cylinder block.
C A U T I O N : If the oil pump is not to be s e r v i c e d ,
do not disturb the position of the oil inlet tube and
strainer a s s e m b l y in the pump body.
If the tube is moved within the pump body, a
replacement tube and strainer a s s e m b l y must
be installed to e n s u r e an airtight s e a l .
