AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
• Oil Pump-to-Case Gasket (4) — leaks past
the gasket are deposited inside the converter
housing only.
# Front Band Lever Pin Plug — leaks past the
plug threads are deposited inside the hous
ing and not on the converter
# pump bushing or converter hub scored, nick-
ed, pitted or burred
# defective oil pump O-ring, gasket or seal
# front band lever pin plug loose or plug
threads are stripped
Correct these conditions as follow:
Leak Diagnosis Procedure
Check fluid level and condition. Adjust fluid lev-
el if necessary.
Raise and support the vehicle.
Inspect the transmission. Correct any external
leaks from the oil pan gasket, filler tube, gover-
nor line, cooler lines and fittings, pressure test
port plugs and case-to-adapter housing gasket.
Remove the converter housing inspection plate.
Wipe all fluid from the converter housing area.
Operate the engine at 2000 rpm for 2 minutes
and check for leaks.
If a fluid leak pattern is not evident, proceed to
the next step.
If a circular type of leak pattern develops, it
indicates a damaged torque converter.
If a trickle type of leak develops, it indicates an
oil pump leak caused by one or more of the
following conditions:
• pump drainback hole obstructed
• pump housing vent obstructed
Remove the transmission and converter.
Tighten the front band adjusting screw until the
band fully applied. This keeps the front clutch
assembly in place when the oil pump is re-
moved and aslo avoids damaging the clutch
discs.
Remove the oil pump and oil seal.
Inspect the pump housing drainback and vent
holes for obstructions. Replace the pump if the
drainback hole cannot be opened with thin wire.
Blow solvent through the vent. Replace the
pump housing if the vent cannot be opened.
Inspect condition of the pump housing and con-
verter hub. Replace the housing if the bushing
is scored. Polish the converter hub with crocus
cloth to avoid damaging a replacement seal.
Install the replacement pump oil seal, O-ring,
gasket and oil pump
Loosen the kickdown lever pin plug two turns.
Apply a small quantity of No. 2 Permatex, or
equivalent, to the plug threads. Tighten the plug
to 17 N*m (150 in-lbs) torque
Adjust the front band.
Install the transmission and converter.
