STEERING AND FRONT AXLE

Service Diagnosis (continued)
Condition
FOAMING MILKY
POWER STEERING
FLUID, LOW FLUID LEVEL
AND POSSIBLE LOW
PRESSURE
LOW P R E S S U R E DUE TO
STEERING PUMP
LOW PRESSURE DUE TO
STEERING GEAR
Possible C a u s e
(1) Air in the fluid, and loss of fluid
due to internal pump leakage
causing overflow.
(1) Flow control valve stuck or
inoperative.
(2) Pressure plate not flat against
cam ring.
(1) Pressure loss in cylinder due to
worn piston ring or badly worn
housing bore.
(2) Leakage at valve rings, valve
body-to-worm seal.
Correction
(1) Check for leak and correct. Bleed
system. Extremely cold tempera-
tures will cause system aeration
should the oil level be low. If oil
level is correct and pump still
foams, remove pump from vehicle
and s e p a r a t e r e s e r v o i r from
housing. Check welsh plug and
housing for cracks. If plug is loose
or housing is cracked, replace
housing.
(1) Remove burrs or dirt or replace.
Flush system.
(2) Correct.
(1) Remove gear from car for dis-
assembly and inspection of ring
and housing bore.
(2) Remove gear from car for dis-
assembly and replace seals.
