STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
FRONT AXLE
FRONT AXLE IDENTIFICATION
The axle code number is stamped on a tag (A)
attached to the differential housing cover.
84831A
The axle build date and the manufacturers build
date are stamped on the right-side axle tube
near the axle housing.
Refer to the Axle Ratio-Ring and Pinion chart in
the Specifications section for axle identification
letter decoding.
FRONT AXLE RE10WAL
Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the front wheels.
Remove the calipers and pads but do not
disconnect the brake hoses from the calipers.
Tie the calipers to the body or a suspension
component. Do not let the brake hose support
the weight of the calipers.
Remove the rotors.
Disconnect the vacuum harness (A) from the
shift motor and the vent hose from the axle
housing.
Mark the front propeller shaft and axle yokes (H)
for assembly reference and disconnect the shaft
from the axle.
Disconnect the following:
• center link (at right-side of tie rod)
• shock absorbers (B) (at axle)
• steering damper
• track bar (at axle)
Loosen the stabilizer bar links at the stabilizer
bar.
Disconnect the stabilizer bar links (C) from the
spring tie plates.
Loosen the bolts (D) attaching the front springs
to the frame brackets.
Loosen the bolts (E) attaching the front springs
to the shackles.
Support the axle (G) with a floor jack and remove
the spring U-bolts and tie plates (F).
Raise the jack enough to relieve axle weight
from the springs.
Remove the front shackle bolts and lower the
front springs to the floor.
Remove the axle assembly (G) with the floor
jack.
