TRANSMISSIONS
Position a transmission jack under the trans-
mission-transfer case
assembly. Secure the assembly to the jack with
safety chains.
Remove the bolts attaching the clutch housing
to the engine and remove the transmission-
transfer case assembly.
Remove the bolts attaching the transmission
to the transfer case and separate the two
components.
Remove the slave cylinder and throwout bear-
ing assembly as outlined in Chapter D.
Remove the clutch housing from the
transmission.

Install the clutch housing on the transmission.
Install the slave cylinder and throwout bearing
assembly.
Insert the shift lever into the transmission tower
and shift the transmission into any forward
gear. Then remove the shift lever.
Mount the transmission on the transmission
jack. Align the splines on the transmission input
shaft with the clutch driven plate splines and
install the transmission.
Install and tighten the clutch housing-to-engine
bolts to 38 N%31m (28 ft-lbs) torque.
Connect the clutch slave cylinder inlet line to the
master cylinder hydraulic line.
Remove the jack from under the transmission
and mount the transfer case on the jack.
Align the transfer case and transmission shafts
and install the transfer case. Tighten the trans-
fer case-to-transmission nuts/bolts to 35
N*31m (26 ft-lbs) torque.
Remove the transmission jack and position a
safety stand under the transfer case to support
the assembly.
Connect the transfer case vacuum hoses and
linkage.
Connect the transmission and transfer case
vent hoses.
Connect the backup light switch switch wires.
Connect the speedometer cable.
Install the rear crossmember. Tighten the
crossmember-to-frame bolts to 41 N « 3 1 m (30
ft-lbs) torque. Tighten the transmission-to-rear
support bolts/nuts to 45 N « 3 1 m (33 ft-lbs)
torque.
Install the shift lever and stub shaft in the trans-
mission shift tower. Secure the stub shaft in the
tower with either a retainer plate or snap ring
(depending on how the transmission was
orginally equipped).
Install the shift tower dust boot.
Install the transmission and transfer case shift
lever boots, shift knobs and locknuts.
