AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS
OVERHAUL
R e m o v e the sun gear (5), driving shell (6) and
the rear planetary a s s e m b l y (7) from the output
shaft.
Separate the sun gear and the driving shell from
the rear planetary a s s e m b l y .
R e m o v e thrust w a s h e r (C) from the inpide of the
driving shell.
R e m o v e the rear s n a p ring (8) and steel thrust
plate (D) from the s u n gear.
R e m o v e the sun gear from the driving shell.
R e m o v e the remaining s n a p ring (9) from the
s u n gear, if necessary.
N O T E : T h e forward end of the sun gear is longer
than the rear.
R e m o v e the thrust w a s h e r ( E ) from the toward
side of the rear planetary assembly (6).
R e m o v e the gear assembly and the thrust plate
(F) from the rear annulus gear.
Inspection
Inspect the bearing surfaces on the output shaft
for nicks, burrs, s c o r e s , and other damage. Light
scratches, nicks, or burrs c a n be removed with
crocus cloth.
N O T E : B e sure all oil p a s s a g e s in the output
shaft are open and c l e a n .
Inspect the speedometer drive gear. R e m o v e
nicks and burrs with an oilstone.
Inspect the s u n gear bushings for wear and
scores. R e p l a c e the sun gear if the bushings are
damaged.
Inspect all thrust w a s h e r s a n d plates and
replace any that are damaged or worn below
thickness specifications.
Inspect the gear a s s e m b l i e s for cracks, broken
pinions, worn gear teeth, broken pinion shafts or
lockpins, or d a m a g e d thrust f a c e s . R e p l a c e
components a s necessary.
Inspect the annulus gears for cracks and worn
teeth. R e p l a c e any distorted s n a p rings.
