CYLINDER BLOCK
ASSEMBLY
Install the upper compression ring (A) using the
ring installer to e x p a n d the ring around the
piston. A ring expander (H) is recommended.
CRANKSHAFT INSTALLATION
Install the crankshaft upper bearing inserts to
the block a s s e m b l y .
Install the lower bearing inserts into the main
bearing c a p s .
Install the upper half of the rear main s e a l into
the cylinder block.
Gently lower the crankshaft into the cylinder
block.
Install the lower half of the rear main oil s e a l into
the rear main bearing c a p .
Install the main bearing c a p s (with the new
inserts) in their original positions.
Tighten the bolts to 108 N*m (80 ft-lbs) torque.
N O T E : T h e bearing c a p s are numbered front
to rear.
CRANKSHAFT END PLAY MEASUREMENT
T h e crankshaft e n d play is controlled at the No. 3
main bearing, which is flanged for this purpose.
Attach a dial indicator (A) to the cylinder block
adjacent to the end of the crankshaft to check
e n d play.
Pry the shaft forward.
Position the dial indicator push rod on the face of
the crankshaft.
S e t the dial pointer at zero.
Pry the shaft fore and aft. Note the dial indicator
pointer.
E n d play is the difference between the high and
low m e a s u r e m e n t s . T h e correct crankshaft end
play is 0.038 - 0.165 mm (0.0015 - 0.0065 in.).
T h e d e s i r e d e n d play is 0.051 - 0.064 mm
(0.002 ~~ 0.0025 in.).
If the e n d play is not within specifications,
inspect the crankshaft thrust f a c e s for wear.
If no wear is apparent, replace the thrust bearing
a n d remeasure the end play.
