STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
STEERING COLUMN SERVICE
Remove the column if necessary and attach
service bracket J 23074 to the column.

Remove the lockplate cover (1).
WARNING: In order to remove the steering
shaft snap ring (2) in the following step, the
lockplate (3) must be compressed. Do not
attempt to remove the lockplate without
compressor tool J 23653-A as the lockplate is
under heavy spring tension.
Compress the lockplate (3) with compressor tool
J 23653-A and remove the steering shaft snap
ring (2). Discard the snap ring. It is not reusable.

Remove the compressor tool.
NOTE: When the steering shaft snap ring is
removed, the shaft is free in the column. Do not
allow the shaft to fall out during disassembly.
Secure the shaft to the lower end of the column
with tape until the shaft is removed.
Remove the lockplate (3), canceling cam (4),
upper bearing preload spring (5) and thrust
washer (6) from the shaft. Remove the horn
button components (A) from the canceling cam.
