POWER STEERING GEAR
Remove the adjuster screw locknut (10). Hold
the adjuster screw (7) with an Allen wrench to
prevent the screw from turning. Discard the
locknut.
Remove the bolts attaching the side cover (9) to
the gear.
Remove the side cover (9) and gasket (8).
Rotate the pitman shaft adjuster screw until the
cover can be removed from the screw. Discard
the cover gasket.
Turn the stub shaft until the pitman shaft teeth
are centered in the housing. Tap the end of the
pitman shaft (6) with a plastic mallet to remove it
from the housing,
NOTE:
Do not disassemble the pitman shaft
components. They are serviced as an assembly
only.
Remove the rack piston (3). Insert arbor tool
J 21552 into the rack piston until the tool stops
against the end of the wormshaft. Grip the tool
firmly. Turn the stub shaft counterclockwise to
force the rack piston (3) onto the arbor tool. Then
remove the tool and rack piston as a unit.

Loosen the adjuster plug locknut (20) with a
brass drift and remove the locknut.
Remove the adjuster plug (45) with tool J 7624.

Remove the valve body (23), stub shaft (17),
wormshaft (16), bearing (26) and bearing races
(25-27) as an assembly.
Remove the wormshaft lower thrust bearing (26)
and the conical bearing races (25-27). Note
position of the races for assembly reference.
