STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
POWER STEERING GEAR
POWER STEERING GEAR REMOVAL
Place the wheels in a straight-ahead position.
Position a drain pan under the steering gear.
Disconnect the hoses at the gear. Raise and
secure the hoses above pump fluid level to
prevent excessive oil spillage. Cap the ends of
the hoses to prevent any entry of dirt.
Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the
steering gear stub shaft.
Raise and support the vehicle.
Mark the pitman arm and shaft for assembly
reference.
Disconnect the center link from the pitman arm
and remove the front stabilizer bar.
Disconnect the pitman arm with tool J 6632-01.
Remove the steering gear mounting bolts and
remove the gear.
POWER STEERING GEAR INSTALLATION
Center the steering gear.
Install the gear in the vehicle.
Align and connect the intermediate shaft to the
stub shaft.
Align and connect the pitman arm. Tighten the
pitman nut and stake the nut to the pitman shaft
in two places.
Install the front stablizer bar and connect the
center link to the pitman arm.
Lower the vehicle.
Connect the hoses to the gear and tighten the
fittings.
Fill the pump reservoir and bleed air from the
system.
