TRAC-LOK DIFFERENTIAL OVERHAUL
Insert forcing screw J 8646-2 through the case
and thread it into the rotating tool J 23781-3.
Thread the screw through the tool until it con-
tacts the centering hole in the step plate.
Tighten forcing screw J 8646-2 enough to re-
lieve clutch pack tension from the pinions (3).
Then remove the pinion thrust washers (2).

Tighten the forcing screw until all clutch pack
tension is relieved from the pinions (3). Slide the
rotating tool pawl (D) into engagement with the
side gear teeth.
Rotate the side gears with the rotating tool until
the pinions (3) can be removed through the
case opening.

Remove the forcing screw and remove the ro-
tating tool, upper side gear (7) and clutch pack
(6).
Remove the differential case from the axle shaft
and remove the remaining side gear and clutch
pack and the step plate tool.
Remove the retainer clips (5) from the clutch
packs. Tag the clutch packs for assembly
reference.
Remove the differential bearings (6) with tool J
22912-01 and a press.
Remove the differential bearing shims (10).
Cleaning and Inspection
Clean all of the differential components in sol-
vent. Use compressed air to dry all parts except
the bearings. Dry the bearings with shop towels
only.
Examine each component for wear or damage.
