OVERHAUL
Inspection
Inspect the friction material on the driving discs.
R e p l a c e d i s c s that are charred, heavily pitted,
flaking or if the driving disc inner splines are
worn or d a m a g e d .
Inspect the steel plates and p r e s s u r e plate
s u r f a c e s for o v e r h e a t i n g , s c o r i n g , a n d for
d a m a g e d drive lugs. Inspect all discs and plates
for flatness and replace if necessary.
Inspect the steel plate lug grooves in the clutch
retainer for smooth surfaces. T h e plates must
slide freely in these grooves. Inspect the clutch
piston ball check. T h e ball should move freely in
its c a g e . Inspect the s e a l ring surfaces in the
clutch retainer for nicks or deep scratches. Light
s c r a t c h e s will not interfere with sealing. Inspect
the piston spring and w a v e spring for distortion
or breakage.
Inspect the s e a l ring grooves in the input shaft
and piston retainer for nicks, burrs, and wear.
Inspect the rear clutch to front clutch thrust
washer. T h e w a s h e r should be 1.09 to 1.14 mm
(0.043 to 0.045 in) thick.
Assembly
P r e s s the input shaft into the piston retainer (if
removed) and install the s n a p ring.
Lubricate and install the inner and outer s e a l
rings on the clutch piston.
N O T E : B e sure that the lips of the s e a l s face into
the retainer bore and that the s e a l s are properly
seated in the piston grooves.
Install the piston a s s e m b l y into the retainer
using a twisting motion to seat the piston at the
bottom of the retainer bore. Install the piston
spring (A) in the retainer with the spring fingers
touching piston and with spring centered in
retainer.
Install o n e e n d of the w a v e spring (B) into
retainer groove and progressively push or tap
the spring into place until completely s e a t e d . If
n e c e s s a r y , lightly tap the piston spring to keep it
centered.
