STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
POWER STEERING GEAR
NOTE:
When the gear is centered, the flat on
the stub shaft (17) should face upward and be
parallel with the side cover (9). The master
spline (P) on the pitman shaft (6) should be
aligned with the adjuster screw (7).
Reinstall the 12-point socket and torque wrench
on the stub shaft. Place the torque wrench in a
vertical position to take the reading.
Rotate the torque wrench 4 5 ° left and right of
center and record the highest drag torque
measured on or near center (R).

Overcenter drag torque should be as follows:
* On new steering gears, drag torque should
equal worm bearing preload plus an additional
0.45 to 0.90 N-m (4 to 8 in-lbs). However, the
combined torque (preload plus drag torque)
must not exceed 2 N-m (18 in-lbs) torque.
• On used steering gears (400 or more miles),
drag torque should equal worm bearing
preload plus an additional 0.5-0.6 N-m (4-5
in-lbs). However, the combined torque
(preload plus drag torque) must not exceed 2
N-m (14 in-lbs).
If drag torque must be adjusted, turn the pitman
shaft adjusting s c r e w (7) c l o c k w i s e or
counterclockwise until desired drag torque is
obtained.
