STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
POWER STEERING GEAR
Install the rack piston end plug (31) in the rack
piston (3). Tighten the plug to 68 N-m (50 ft-lbs)
torque.
Lubricate and install the housing end plug O-ring
(32) on the end plug (2).
Install and seat the end plug (2) in the housing.
Lightly tap the end plug with a plastic mallet to
seat it.
Install the end plug retainer ring (1). Position the
ring so the ring end gap is not aligned with the
hole inside of the gear housing. Tap lightly on
the plug to be sure that the ring is fully seated.
Adjust worm bearing preload and pitman shaft
overcenter drag torque a s outlined in the
following Power Steering Gear Adjustment
procedure.

C A U T I O N : T h e following adjustment pro-
c e d u r e s must be performed exactly a s
described and in the sequence outlined. Failure
to do so can result in damage to the gear internal
components or improper steering response.
Always adjust worm bearing preload first and
pitman shaft overcenter drag torque last.
Worm Bearing Preload Adjustment
If the adjuster plug was not previously seated in
the housing, seat the plug with tool J 7624.
Approximately 27 N-m (20 ft-lbs) torque is
required.
Place an index mark (J) on the gear housing
opposite one of the holes (K) in the adjuster
plug (45).

Measure back (counterclockwise) 4.7 to 6.3 mm
(3/16 to 1/4 inch) from index mark (J) and make
a second index mark (L) on the housing.

Turn the adjuster plug counterclockwise until the
adjuster plug hole (K) is aligned with the second
index mark (L).
