Service replacement ring and pinion gear sets
are machined to the standard setting only. Pi-
nion depth variance on replacement sets will
range from plus to minus 0.004 inch'*. (0.10
mm). Any service replacement set with a vari-
ance exceeding these figures, or a set with mis-
matched identification numbers must not be
used. These gear sets should be returned to the
parts distribution center.
NOTE: Some factory installed gear sets may
have an extra 0.010 or 0.020 inch (0.25 or 0.50
mm) milled off the pinion. These sets have a
unique variance number. For example, if the
number on the pinion is 23, the number 2 indi-
cates 0.020 inch (0.50 mm) was milled off the
pinion and the variance is 0.003 inches (0.076
mm). Similarily, if the variance number is 16, the
number 1 indicates 0.010 inch (0.25 mm) was
milled off the pinion and variance is 0.006 inch
(0.15 mm).
Refer to the Pinion Variance Chart in the Speci-
fications section when adjusting pinion gear
depth. The chart helps determine starter shim

NOTE: The chart will only help determine starter
shim thickness. It will not provide the exact
shim thickness required for final depth
adjustment.
ASSEMBLY
AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
Pinion Gear Depth Adjustment
Verify that the ring and pinion are a matched set
before proceeding.
Measure the thickness of the original pinion
depth shim (14).
Note the depth variance (B) marked on the pi-
nion gear.
Determine pinion depth starter shim thickness
as follows:
If the original ring and pinion set is being
installed, start with the original depth shim.
If a replacement gear set is being installed,
determine how much must be added to or
subtracted from the original shim for best
starter shim thickness.
_ Refer to the Pinion Variance Chart in the
Specifications section. Note where the Old
and New Pinion Marking columns intersect.
The intersecting figure represents the plus or
minus amount needed. For example, if the
old pinion is +1 and the new pinion is -3, the
intersecting figure is -f-0.004 inch (0.10 mm).
Add this amount to the original shim. Or, if
the old pinion is -3 and the new pinion is -2,
the intersecting figure is -0.001 inch (0.025
mm). Subtract this amount from the original
shim.
