Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.
Remove the flexible coupling.
Mount the steering gear in a vise. Clamp the
gear on a mounting boss only.
Center the gear as follows:
• Rotate the wormshaft (10) stop-to-stop and
count the total number of turns.
• Turn the wormshaft back 1/2 the total number
of turns to center the gear.
Remove the pitman shaft adjuster screw lock-
nut (2).
Remove the cover bolts (1).
Remove the cover (3) and gasket (5).
Slide the adjuster screw (6) and shims (4) out of
the pitman shaft (7). Retain the screw and shims
for end play measurement during assembly.
Remove the pitman shaft (7).
Remove the worm bearing adjuster locknut (20)
and remove the worm bearing adjuster (19).
Remove the wormshaft (11) and ball nut (12) as
an assembly.
CAUTION: Do not allow the ball nut to rotate
freely and bottom at either end of the wormshaft
during service operations. The tangs at the ends
of the ball guides (15) could become damaged.
Remove the upper bearing (10) from the
wormshaft (11).
Remove the ball guide clamp attaching screws
and remove the clamp (14) and ball guides (15).
Separate the guide halves and retain the ball
bearings (13) that remained in the guides during
removal.
Remove the remaining bill bearings (13) from
the ball nut (12). Place a cloth under the bal nut.
Then rotate the wormshaft back and forth until
the bearings drop out onto the cloth.
NOTE: A total of 50 ball bearings are used (25 in
each circuit).
Remove the wormshaft (11) from the ball nut
(12).
Remove the seals (22) and (23) from the gear
housing (8). Use screwdriver (C) to pry the seals
out. Discard the seals.
