CHECKING 4WHEEL-DRIVE ENGAGEMENT
If a vehicle equipped with a model 128 or 228 transfer case is suspected of not engaging the front
axle when shifted to 4WD, a 4-wheel-drive engagement check should be performed.
PROCEDURE
Drive the vehicle in the 4WD mode a short
distance to allow the transfer case to engage.
Leave mode selector in the 4WD position. Turn
off engine. If equipped with automatic transmis-
sion, place gear selector in park position. If
equipped with manual transmission, shift into
gear
With the vehicle on level ground, raise the left-
front wheel and attempt to rotate it. If the left-
front wheel cannot be rotated, 4-wheel-drive
engagement is indicated. If the left-front wheel
can be rotated, 4-wheel-drive is not engaged.
A shift control check must be performed.
Procedures for checking the vacuum controls
and vacuum motors used in the Selec-Trac or
Selec-Drive systems can be found in the transfer
case section of the appropriate M.R. Workshop
Manual.
