AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
IN-VEHICLE SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENT
GENERAL
SERVICE INFORMATION
The Model 999, three speed, automatic trans-
mission is used in Wrangler/YJ models.
This section covers removal, installation, lubri-
cation and in-vehicle service and adjustment
procedures for the Model 999
automatic
transmission.
The procedures, specifications and special
tools needed to overhaul the Model 999 trans-
mission are contained in the T.A. 700/900 Com-
ponent Service Manual.
GEARSHIFT LINKAGE
ADJUSTMENT
Raise the vehicle.
Loosen the shift rod trunnion jamnuts.
Remove the shift rod trunnion-to-bellcrank lock
pin and disengage the trunnion and rod at the
bellcrank.
Place the gearshift lever in Park.
Move the valve body manual lever rearward into
Park detent. Be sure the lever is moved rear-
ward as far as possible. Park detent is the last
rearward detent.
Check for positive engagement of the park lock
by attempting to rotate the propeller shaft. The
shaft will not rotate if the park lock pawl is fully
engaged.
Adjust the shift rod trunnion to obtain a free pin
fit in the bellcrank arm and tighten the trunnion
jamnuts. Prevent the shift rod from turning
while tightening the jamnuts.
NOTE:
Gearshift linkage lash must be eliminat-
ed to obtain proper adjustment. Pull downward
on the shift rod and press upward on the outer
bellcrank to eliminate lash.
Move the gearshift lever to Park and Neutral
and check starter operation. The engine should
start only in these positions. If the engine does
not start in P or N (or starts in R, D, 2, or 1),
adjustment is incorrect or the neutral switch is
defective.
Lower the vehicle.
THROTTLE LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
Disconnect the throttle control rod spring.
Use the throttle control rod spring (1) to hold
the adjusting link (2) forward and against the
nylon washer (3).

Block the choke open and set the carburetor
throttle off the fast idle cam.
