Ball Joint Replacement; Upper Ball Joint Removal; Upper Ball Joint Installation - Jeep 1987 Wrangler Workshop Manual

STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
FRONT AXLE
Insert the tools through the axle tube and drive
out the seal and guard. Remove the seal and
guard through the shift motor housing opening in
the axle.
Working through the shift housing opening in the
axle, insert the tool rod into the axle tube. Then
position the replacement seal and guide over
the tool threaded rod.
Attach installer tool J 34659-2 to the tool rod.
Tighten the tool nut to pull the guide and seal into
place.
Remove installer tool J 34659-2 from the tool
rod. Remove the tool through the axle opening.
Remove the remainder of the installer tools.
Install the intermediate shaft.
BALL JOINT REPLACEMENT
Upper Ball Joint
Removal
Remove the steering knuckle.
Position receiver tool J 34503-1 on the upper
ball joint.
Place adapter tool J 34503-3 in the bottom of the
tool C-clamp.
Mount the C clamp on the receiver tool and
ball joint.
Tighten the C-clamp screw to press the ball joint
out of the knuckle and into the receiver tool.

Joint Installation
Start the replacement ball joint in the knuckle.
Place tool J 34503-5 on the replacement ball
joint.
Install tool J 34503-12 in the bottom of the tool
C-clamp.
