OVERHAUL
• Add 0.10 mm (0.004-in) to the dial indicator
reading for required preload shim thickness.
For e x a m p l e , if the indicator reading w a s
2.16 mm (0.085-in), required thickness would
be 2.26 mm (0.089-in).
N O T E : T h e allowable tolerance for the preload
shim is plus or minus 0.05 mm (0.002-in).
Install the required thickness preload shims (33)
on the front bearing race (32). U s e petroleum
jelly to hold the shims in place.

Install the alignment dowels (77) in the front
c a s e .

Coat the mounting surface of the front bearing
retainer (34) with J e e p silicone sealer.
Align and install the front bearing retainer (34)
on the front c a s e .
C A U T I O N : B e sure the preload s h i m s (33) are
not displaced during retainer plate installation.
Install and tighten the front mounting studs (36)
to 28 N-m (21 ft-lbs) torque. U s e two nuts to
tighten the studs. Rotate the mainshaft while
tightening the studs to help s e a t the shaft
bearings.

Install a replacement oil seal (35) in the front
bearing retainer (34) with tool B.V.I. FM. 18.
S e a t the s e a l fully into the retainer.
