HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING
AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM
• Do not discharge R-12 in any area containing
an open flame (e.g. portable heaters, welding
equipment).
• Use an electronic-type leak detector to check
for system leaks whenever possible. The
halide torch leak detector utilizes an open
flame for the detection process. R-12 refrig-
erant becomes a highly poisionous gas when
exposed to an open flame. If a halide torch
detector must be used, avoid inhaling the re-
sulting fumes.
CAUTION: Generally, R-12 is not corrosive un-
less combined with water. However, it can dis-
color chrome and bright metal trim. Keep R-12
refrigerant away from these items.
• R-12 becomes highly corrosive when com-
bined with water and can damage painted
and unpainted metal surfaces. Do not allow
R-12 to contact any metal surfaces during
service operations.
SERVICE VALVES
The discharge (high pressure) and inlet (suc-
tion) service valves are used for diagnosis,
charging, discharging and evacuating the sys-
tem. They are also used to isolate the system
during component removal/installation.
The service valves are three-position valves.
Normal operating position for the valve stem is
position (A) which is the back-seated (full-out)
position. The stem is turned counterclockwise
to place it in this position.
