CYLINDER BLOCK
ASSEMBLY
CAMSHAFT BEARING DESCRIPTION
T h e c a m s h a f t (A) rotates within four s t e e l -
shelled, babbitt-lined bearings that are p r e s s e d
into the cylinder block and then line r e a m e d .

T h e camshaft bearing bores are step-bored
(larger at the front bearing than at the rear) to
permit easier removal and installation of the
camshaft. T h e camshaft bearings are p r e s s u r e
lubricated.
NOTE: It is not advisable to attempt to replace
the camshaft bearings unless special removal
and installation tools are available.
Camshaft end play is maintained by the load
placed on the camshaft by the oil pump a n d
distributor drive gear.
T h e helical cut of the gear holds the c a m s h a f t
sprocket thrust face against the cylinder block
face. Camshaft end play is zero during engine
operation.
CAMSHAFT INSTALLATION
Lubricate the camshaft with A M C / J e e p Engine
Oil Supplement, or equivalent, prior to installing
the camshaft.
Install the camshaft sprockets.
Install the timing c h a i n .
NOTE: B e s u r e the timing marks (A) on the
sprockets are properly aligned.

Install the c a m s h a f t s p r o c k e t retaining bolt
and w a s h e r and tighten the bolt to 108
N-m
(80 ft-lbs) torque.
N O T E : T o verify the correct installation of
the timing chain, turn the crankshaft to locate
t h e c a m s h a f t s p r o c k e t t i m i n g m a r k
at
approximately the one o'clock position. T h i s
positions the crankshaft sprocket timing mark
where the adjacent tooth m e s h e s with the chain
at the three o'clock position.
