ASSEMBLY
REAR MAIN BEARING OIL SEAL INSTALLATION
N O T E : T h e crankshaft rear main bearing oil
seal c o n s i s t s of two half pieces of neoprene with
a single lip that effectively s e a l s the rear of the
crankshaft. R e p l a c e the upper and lower seal
halves a s a unit to e n s u r e leak-free operation.
R e m o v e the rear main bearing c a p .
Wipe the s e a l surface a r e a of the crankshaft
until it is c l e a n .
Apply a thin coat of engine oil.
Coat the lip of the s e a l with engine oil (A).
Position the upper s e a l into the cylinder block.
N O T E : T h e lip of the s e a l f a c e s toward the front
of the engine.
Install the rear main bearing c a p .
T i g h t e n all main b e a r i n g bolts to 108 N-m
(80 ft-lbs) torque.
Coat both s i d e s of the lower s e a l e n d tabs with
R T V s e a l a n t (B) ( A M C G a s k e t - i n - a - T u b e , or
equivalent). Do not apply sealant to the lip of the
s e a l .
Coat the outer curved surface of the lower s e a l
with s o a p ( C ) and the lip of the s e a l with engine
oil.
Position the lower seal into the bearing c a p
r e c e s s a n d seat it firmly.
Coat both chamfered e d g e s of the rear main
bearing c a p with R T V sealant (D).
C A U T I O N : Do not apply s e a l a n t to the cylinder
block mating surfaces of the rear main bearing
cap b e c a u s e the bearing-to-journal c l e a r a n c e
would b e altered.
