CLUTCH SERVICE
PILOT BUSHING REPLACEMENT
Remove the transmission and transfer case as
outlined in Chapter E.
Remove the clutch cover and driven p'ate as
outlined in this section.
On six-cylinder models, remove the pilot bush-
ing lubricating wick. Soak the wick in engine oil.
Remove the bushing with puller J 5822 and
slide hammer J 2619-01.
CAUTION: The replacement bushing can be
damaged if misaligned during installation. Keep
the bushing parallel with the crankshaft center-
line to avoid damage.
Install the replacement pilot bushing in the
crankshaft bore. Use tool J 5824-01 on four-
cylinder models or tool J 33169 on six-cylinder
models.
On six-cylinder models, squeeze excess oil
from the pilot bushing lubricating wick and in-
sert the wick into the pilot bushing bore.
Install the driven piate and clutch cover as out-
lined in this section.
Install the transmission and transfer case as
outlined in Chapter E.
CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER REMOVAL
Disconnect the hydraulic line from the cylinder.
Cap the hydraulic line and cylinder to prevent
dirt entry.
Remove the cotter pin and washer that retain
the cylinder push rod on the brake pedal pivot
and slide the rod off the pivot.
Remove the nuts attaching the cylinder to the
mounting studs on the dash panel.
Remove the cylinder.
CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER INSTALLATION
Position the cylinder on the dash panel mount-
ing studs.
Install and tighten the cylinder attaching nuts on
the studs. Tighten the nuts to 26 N*m (19 ft-lbs)
torque.
Connect the hydraulic line to the cylinder. Tight-
en the line to 15
NTTT
(11 ft-lbs) torque.
Position the cylinder push rod on the brake
pedal pivot and install the retaining washer and
a replacement cotter pin.
Fill the master cylinder with Jeep brake fluid, or
equivalent labeled S A E 1703 or DOT 3, only.
Install the reservoir cap on the cylinder and
bleed the hydraulic system. Refer to the bleed-
ing procedure outlined in this section.
