GENERAL SERVICE PROCEDURES
GENERAL
The procedures outlined in this section are all
performed with the axle mounted in the vehicle;
This includes removal and installation proce-
dures for the standard and T r a c - L o k
differential.
AXLE IDENTIFICATION
The axle ratio and the ring gear/pinion gear
tooth combination is stamped on a tag attached
to the differential housing cover (A).

AXLE LUBRICANT CHANGE
Drive the vehicle to bring the axle lubricant to
normal operating temperature.
Raise the vehicle.
Remove the axle housing fill plug.
Remove the old lubricant from the housing with
a suction gun.
Refill the axle with 1.2 liters (2.5 pints) of the
specified lubricant.
Install the fill plug.
Lower the vehicle.
AXLE SHAFT
Axle Shaft Removal
Raise the vehicle.
Remove the wheel and brake drum.
Remove the nuts that attach the guide plate (2),
seal retainer (3) and brake support plate to the
axle flange.
NOTE: The recommended lubricant for stan-
dard and Trac-Lok rear axles is J E E P axle lubri-
cant, or an equivalent S A E 75W-90, API Grade
GL 5 gear lubricant.
