Install replacement snap rings (4) on the pinion
shaft.
Remove the differential from the axle shaft (A)
and remove the shaft from the vise.
Remove the differential bearings with remover J
22912-01 and a press.
Install the zero end play shims on each side
side of the case.
Reinstall the differential bearings with tools J
8092 and J 21784.
Position and align the ring gear (10) on the dif-
ferential case (9).
Install replacement ring gear bolts. Tighten the
bolts alternately and evenly to 70 N»m (52 ft-lbs)
torque.
Proceed to Ring Gear Backlash Adjustment.
Ring Gear Backlash Adjustment
NOTE: Ring gear backlash establishes the run-
ning clearance between the ring and pinion
gears. Adjustment involves moving the ring
gear toward or away from the pinion. Adjust-
ment is controlled by the differential bearing
end play shims.
Install the differential assembly in the axle
housing.
Install the differential bearing caps. Tighten the
bearing cap bolts to 77 N*m (57 ft-lbs) torque.
Remount dial indicator J 8001 on the axle
housing.
Position the indicator stylus against the drive
side of one of the ring gear teeth. Be sure the
stylus is at a right angle to the tooth.

Move the ring gear forward and zero the dial
indicator.
Move the ring gear rearward then forward and
note the dial indicator reading.
