STANDARD DIFFERENTIAL OVERHAUL
REMOVAL AND DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURES
Pinion Gear and Bearing Removal
Remove the pinion yoke (19) and nut (20).
NOTE: Retain the pinion nut. It will be used for
pinion depth adjustment at reassembly.
Tap the end of the pinion gear (11) with a raw-
hide mallet to release it from the front bearing
(17).
Remove the axle housing cover.
Remove the pinion gear (11), pinion bearings
(12-17) and preload spacer (15) from the axle
housing. Discard the spacer. It is not reusable.
Remove the pinion seal (18) with tool J 9233.
Remove the pinion rear bearing cup (13) with
driver handle J 8092 and tool J 21786.
NOTE: The pinion depth shim (14) is located
under the rear bearing cup (13). Remove and
retain the shim.
Remove the pinion front bearing cup (16) with
driver handle J 8092 and tool J 21787.
Remove the rear bearing (12) from the pinion
gear with an arbor press and tool J 22912-01.

Differential Disassembly
Remove the differential bearing cups (5). Tag
the cups for assembly reference.
Mount the differential case (9) in a vise.
Remove the ring gear bolts (8). Discard the
bolts. They are not reusable.
Remove the ring gear (10) from the case with a
brass drift (A) and hammer.
