Possible Cause
(1) Loose belt
(1) Loose belt
(1) Excessive back pressure in hoses or
steering gear caused by restriction
(1) Scored pressure plates, thrust plate
or rotor
(2) Extreme wear of cam ring
(1) Low oil level

Air in the oil. Poor pressure hose
connection
(1) Vanes not installed properly

Vanes sticking in rotor slots
(1) Defective flow control valve.
(1) Pump shaft bearing scored
(1) Loose pump belt

Low oil level in reservoir
NOTE: Low oil level will also result in
excessive pump noise

Steering gear to column misalign-
ment

Lower coupling flange rubbing
against steering gear adjuster
plug
(5) Tires not properly inflated
Correction
(1)
Adjust belt tension to specification
(1)
Adjust belt tension to specification
(1)
Locate restriction and correct. Re-
place part if necessary

Replace parts and flush system
(2)
Replace parts
(1) Fill reservoir to proper level
(2)
Tighten connector to specified
torque. Bleed system by operating
steering from right to left - full
turn
(1) Install properly
(2)
Free up by removing burrs, varnish,
or dirt
(1) Replace part
(1) Replace housing and shaft. Flush
system
(1) Adjust belt tension to specification
(2)
Fill to proper level. If excessively
low, check all lines and joints for
evidence of external leakage. Tight-
en loose connectors.
(3)
Align steering column
(4)
Loosen pinch bolt and assemble
properly
(5) Inflate to recommended pressure
