REAR AXLE
REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
R E A R AXLE ASSEMBLY R E M O V A L
Raise the vehicle.
Position safety stands under the frame rails.
Place the stands even with, or slightly ahead of
the rear spring front eyes.
Remove the rear wheels.
Mark the rear propeller shaft and
axle yokes
for
assembly reference.
Disconnect the propeller shaft from the axle
yoke.
Disconnect the track bar at the axle bracket and
the axle vent tube at the axle.
Disconnect the parking brake cables from the
equalizer.
Disconnect the shock absorbers from the axle
brackets.
Disconnect the brake hose from the fitting on
the floorpan. Cap the hose end to prevent dirt
entry.
Remove the spring U-bolts and tie plates.
Loosen, but do not remove, the bolts that at-
tach the spring eyes to the frame brackets and
rear shackles.
Support the axle with a hydraulic jack.
Raise the axle just enough to relieve axle
weight from the springs.
Remove the bolts attaching the springs to the
shackles and lower the springs to the floor.

Support the axle assembly on a hydraulic jack
and slide the axle into position under the
vehicle.
Raise the springs and install the bolts that at-
tach the springs to the shackles. Do not tighten
the bolts at this time.
Align the center bolts on the springs with the
bolt locating holes on the axle.
Lower the axle onto the springs and install the
spring U-bolts and tie plates.
Tighten the U-bolt nuts to 122 N^m (90 ft-lbs)
torque.
Connect the axle vent hose, parking brake
cables, and brake hose.
Align and connect the propeller shaft. Tighten
the U-joint clamp bolts to 19 N*m (170 in-lbs)
torque.
Connect the track bar and shock absorbers.
Check and adjust axle lubricant level if
necessary.
Install the wheels.
Bleed the brake system.
Remove supports and lower the vehicle.
Tighten the rear spring shackle bolts to 129
N«m (95 ft-lbs) torque.
Tighten the rear spring-to-frame bracket bolts
to 142 N*m (105 ft-lbs) torque.

Lower the jack and remove the axle assembly.
