STEERING COLUMN SERVICE
GENERAL SERfiCE INFORMATION
It is not necessary to remove the steering
column in order to service the various switches
and components inside the column housing.
Column removal is only necessary when the
column jacket, shift tube, steering shaft, or lower
bearing assembly must be replaced.
Refer to the steering column disassembly
procedures for removal and installation of the
switches and components mounted inside the
column housing.
The ignition and dimmer switches are both
mounted on the exterior of the column jacket.
Switch replacement and adjustment procedures
are outlined in the following procedures.
IGNITION SWITCH REPLACEMENT
Ignition Switch Removal
Disconnect the battery negative cable.
Tape the dimmer switch actuator rod (3) to the
column to prevent the rod from disengaging.
Remove the dimmer switch (2).
Disconnect the ignition switch wire harness.
Remove the ignition switch (1). Lift the switch
upward until it clears the actuator rod and
remove the switch.
Ignition Switch Installation
Insert the actuator rod into the access hole at the
bottom of the replacement ignition switch.
Install the switch on the column.
Adjust the ignition switch as follows:
• Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the Off-
U/nlock position.
• Loosen the switch screws.
<§ Move the switch downward to eliminate
lash and tighten the switch screws to 4 N-m
(35 in-lbs) torque.
Connect the wire harness to the ignition
switch (1).
Engage the actuator rod (3) in the dimmer switch
(2) and install the switch on the column jacket.
Remove the tape holding the actuator rod (3) to
the column.
Adjust the dimmer switch (2) as follows:
• Compress the switch slightly and insert a 3/32
inch diameter drill into switch hole (A). The drill
will prevent any horizontal movement of the
switch.
• Move the switch toward the steering wheel to
remove actuator rod lash.
