Tru ck pow er steerin g installations are divided into two
ca te g o rie s ; the Conventional System and the In tegral G ear
System .
With both system s, hydraulic p ressu re is p ro ­
vided by an engine-driven vane-type pump.
W ith the Conventional System (40-60 S erie s ), hydraulic
p re s s u re is d eliv e re d fro m the pump, through two hoses
to a control va lve which senses pow er requirem ent and
supplies the needed hydraulic p ressu re through two addi­
tional hoses to the pow er cylinder.
a ro ta ry -ty p e va lve which is mounted d ire c tly to the
s te e rin g g ea r assem bly so that the steering shaft, va lve,
w orm shaft and rack-piston nut are in-line.
POWER STEERING GEAR ADJUSTMENT
Sector lash adjustment is the only pow er steerin g gear
adjustment that can be made on the vehicle.
o r d e r to make this adjustment, it is also necessary to
check the combined valve drag and worm bearing preload.
1. Rem ove steerin g connecting rod fro m pitman arm .
2.
Loosen secto r lash adjusting sc re w locknut and back
o ff adjusting s c re w to the lim it of its tra v e l.

3. Disconnect
battery ground w ire and rem ove horn
button cap.
4. Turn the steerin g wheel through its fu ll tra v e l, then
locate wheel at center of its tra v e l.
5. Check combined valve drag and worm bearing p re ­
load, with an inch-pound torque wrench on the s te e r­
ing shaft nut, by rotating through the center of tra v e l
(approxim ately
highest reading.
