5. R efin ish panel.
Dents or Pits in Panels, Cracks in G laze Coat
F igu re 72 shows a panel which has re c e iv e d a heavy
glancing blow,
resulting in an indentation o r la rg e pit
in the panel.
The follow in g procedure is advised fo r a
re p a ir of this type of damage. C racks in the gla ze or
fin ish
coat
of
p lastic
and paint
procedure.
NOTE:
This rep a ir may be used w h erever the
damage is not extensive and the p lastic is not
p ierced , but the damage a rea does requ ire a
p lastic build-up.
1. R em ove paint down to the p lastic fro m area su r­
rounding the damage.
2. Scuff area surrounding damaged area to provid e a
good bonding surface.
3. Clean up w ork area with P re p -S o l or equivalent then
use tack rag fo r finish clean-up.
4. Use the P la s tic Solder R epair or equivalent (p r e ­
viou sly describ ed) to f i l l the im perfection s.
5.
Feath er-san d damaged a rea with No. 220 sandpaper
and finish sand with No. 320.
6. P re p a re re p a ir area fo r paint refinishing operation.
Cracked Panels
NOTE:
F o r best resu lts, tem perature should be
at lea st 70°-75°F.
1. In the case of a cracked panel, such as shown in F ig ­
ure 73, cut along the break line with a hacksaw blade
and rem ove broken portion of the panel.
2. R em ove
the
paint down to the p lastic fro m
portions of the panel.
3. R em ove
d irt
and
deadener
p rox im ately
2 to 3 inches fro m
the under side of both portions of the panel. A lso,
rem ove paint and scuff area clean to provid e a good
bonding surface.
4. R em ove a ll cracked and fractu red m a teria l along
the break.

NOTE:
Mask surrounding panels using a non­
staining masking tape.
5. Use " C"
clam ps to align panel portions allow ing
approxim ately 1/8" between the panels o r as n eces­
sa ry to provid e p rop er alignm ent of panels, Figu re
74.
6. Cut two p ieces of woven glass fib e r cloth fo r backup
of su fficient siz e to overlap the fra ctu re by approxi­
m ately two inches.
7. Clean up re p a ir area with P re p -S o l or equivalent then
use tack ra g fo r finish cleanup.

NOTE:
In som e cases it may be advantageous
to
p rovide
additional
fra ctu re.
This may be accom plished by placing
glass
cloth
strip s in the panel break b efo re
applying the pla stic m ixture.
Fractured Panels
Som etim es
damage
w ill occur to panels where the
underside is
in accessible o r fo r reasons of panel con­
tour it is im p ra c tica l to use back p lies o f fib e r glass
cloth.
The follow in g re p a ir operations are typical of
this type of damage.
1. P re p a re the damaged a rea by grinding o r filin g all
cracked
and
splintered
fractu re.
2. B evel the edge of the fractu re at approxim ately a
20° angle.
R em ove paint fro m area surrounding fractu re.

4. Scuff
su rface to p rovide a good bonding surface.
Then, clean up a rea with P re p -S o l or equivalent and
wipe dry.
5. P ro te c t adjacent panels by masking, use non-staining
masking tape.
6. Cut a strip o f fib e r glass cloth of su fficient size , so
the fra c tu re w ill be lapped fro m 1 to 2 inches on a ll
sides.
7. P re p a re pla stic m ixture in an unwaxed paper cup.
