NOTE:
It
is
advantageous to place wood or
m etal spacers (approxim ately 3/8 thick) between
the clutch le v e r s and the co v er to hold the le v e r s
down as the holding s c rew s are rem oved or when
clutch is rem oved fro m engine.
Installation To Vehicle
1. A ssem b le driven plate and clutch cover assem bly to

The 2 plate, dry disc type clutch consists o f three
b asic assem b lies:
The c o v e r and re a r p ressu re plate
assem bly, front p res s u re plate assem bly and dual driven
disc
assem bly.
The dual driven disc assem b lies are
splined to the tran sm ission main d rive gea r (clutch gea r)
shaft.
The
fron t p ressu re plate, located between the
d riven discs, has 2 fric tio n su rfaces and is coupled to
both the re a r p ressu re plate and c o ve r through p a irs of
steel d riv e straps bolted at each o f its 4 d rivin g b osses.
Removal From Vehicle
1. R e fe r to applicable procedure in T ran sm ission Sec­
tion 7, and rem ove transm ission. R elea se bearing
and actuating m echanism a re assem bled in housing at

flyw heel in accordance with m arking on d riven plate
fo r flyw h eel side.
2. Line up the driven plate assem bly and the pilot b e a r­
ing with a dummy shaft b e fo re tightening co ve r hold­
ing screw s. Tighten holding screw s b efo re rem oving
dummy shaft.
3. A fte r tran sm ission has been assem bled, adjust pedal
as
d escribed
under "C lu tch P ed al Adjustm ents,"
"H y d ra u lic Clutch C on tro ls."

Installation in Vehicle & Lever Adjustm ent
The co v e r is bolted to the engine flyw h eel.
p ressu re
springs, located between the cover and re a r
p ressu re plate, p rovid e p ositive engagem ent between the
cover, the p ressu re plates, driven disc assem b lies and
flyw h eel.
No adjustment fo r w ear is provided in the clutch its e lf.
An individual adjustment is provided fo r locating each
le v e r .
In manufacturing this le v e r adjusting nut is locked
in place and should never be disturbed unless the clutch
is disassem bled fo r overhaul.

2. Look fo r
" X "
m ark stamped on p ressu re plates,
co v e r and flyw heel. If " X "
p ieces, punch m ark them (with p ric k punch) in a line
at
one
location
fo r
installation.
3. Install aligning tool (J-21169) or an old transm ission
main d riv e gear, through hubs o f driven discs into
pilot bearing, and place a wood or m etal spacer (ap­
proxim ately 1" x 1" x 3/8" thick) between each r e ­
lea se le v e r and clutch co ve r (fig. 19) to fa cilita te
rem ova l and installation.
4. Rotate the flyw h eel (if n ecessa ry) to locate one co ver
mounting bolt at top, then loosen a ll 4 c o v e r mounting
bolts a ltern ately and evenly until p ressu re is r e ­
leased fro m discs.
5. R em ove top bolt and install alignm ent stud (part of
T o o l J-21169) in its place.
6. R em ove 3 rem aining bolts (allow ing clutch assem bly
to hang fro m stud), then slide clutch assem bly from
stud to rem ove from veh icle.
Installation To Vehicle
1. P la ce alignm ent tool (stud section) in upper clutch
mounting bolt hole.
2. Install alignm ent tool (arb or section) through re a r
driven plate splines and install front driven plate
o v e r tool with hub section o f plate toward flyw heel.
3. L ift com plete clutch assem bly (with one hole held to
top) and slide upper bolt hole o v e r alignm ent stud in
