2. W ith fron t wheels set straight ahead, check position
of m ark on w orm shaft designating steerin g gea r high
point.
T h is m ark should be at the top side of the
shaft at 12 o 'c lo c k position and lined up with the
m ark in the coupling lo w e r clamp.
3. If gea r has been m oved o ff high point when setting
wheels in straight ahead position, loosen adjusting
s le e v e
clam ps on both le ft and right hand tie rods,
then turn both sle e v e s an equal number of turns in
the sam e d irection to b ring gea r back on high point.
CA U TIO N :
Turning
number of turns o r in d ifferen t d irection s w ill
disturb the to e -in setting of the wheels.

4. Readjust to e -in as outlined in Section 3 (if n ecessary).
Steering G ear High Point C e n te rin g -
All Except C -P l0 -2 0 - 3 0
T h ese v eh icles a re built with the steerin g gea r on high
point with the fron t wheels in a straigh t ahead position.
T h ese units in corp orate a non-adjustable tie rod which
p rev e n ts this adjustment.
An adjustable connecting rod is available which w ill
p e r m it high point centerin g on C40-50 s e rie s trucks with
5000# and 7000# axles (fo r s e r v ic e only).
point, p roceed as fo llow s:
1. R em ove the connecting rod as outlined la te r in this
section.
2. Install the new adjustable connecting rod.
3. Set the fron t wheels in a straight ahead position.
T h is can be done by d rivin g the veh icle a short d is­
tance on a fla t su rface to determ ine steerin g wheel
position at which the veh icle fo llo w s a straight path.
4. W ith the w heels set straigh t ahead, the steerin g gear
w orm shaft flat should be at 12 o ' clock position. A d ­
just the connecting rod until the fla t is at 12 o 'clo ck .
Torque the castellated nuts on the connecting rod and
in sert cotter pins.
