POINT UNIT
(LEVER & SUPPORT ASSY.)

V -8 Engines— (Figs. 1 1 i & 12i)
1. On distributor without governor:
a.
F ill housing lu bricating cavity with prop er com ­
pound, p ress in new plastic seal and install felt
washer.
b. Replace the vacuum advance unit.
c. Install the b re a k e r plate in housing and the spring
retain er on the upper bushing.
2. On distribu tor with govern or install seals and a s ­
sem ble

a. Insert low er seal through side opening and start
seal
straight
in
b. P lace
a steel disc approxim ately 15/16" diam ­
ete r on top o f seal.
through top o f distribu tor and against disc. P r e s s
seal to bottom of counterbore.
c. Install spring w asher on top of seal.
d. Start upper seal in b ore with lip of seal up and,
using steel disc and rod, p ress seal flush with
top of counterbore.
NOTE:
Spring should seat on the •■flat" m a­
chined on one side o f the mainshaft.
3. Lu b ricate and slide weight cam ove r mainshaft and
install w eights and spring (fig. 18i).
4. Insert mainshaft into housing, indexing it with d rive
gear and washers.
5. Slide distributor d riv e
shaft and install new pin. Tap new pin through gear
and mainshaft.
Check shaft for fr e e
heavy duty m odels, install shock mounting assem bly.

Mainshaft
.002"-.007" , Add or rem ove shims as necessary.
6. Install contact point set and condenser to breaker
plate. Connect leads as shown in Figu re 2i„
NOTE:
Contact point spring tension is facto ry-
set above specifications to assure ease of final
adjustment. C o rrect tension is 19-23 oz.
7. Install
rotor to cam assem bly, indexing round and
square pilot holes.
8. Set spinner govern or as outlined under •'•'Governor
S etting."
GOVERNOR SETTING
Since govern or speed is a function o f both the distrib u ­
tor
" spinner' '
and
p ositive method of accu rately setting speed is to adjust
the spinner on the veh icle.
If an approxim ate bench setting of the spinner is de­
sired , the follow ing procedure can be followed:
1. With '• sp in n er" valve adjusted so that at lea st two
threads on the valve a re
mount the distribu tor in a tester.
2. Screw vacuum adapter into low er vacuum opening
on the distributor housing.
3. With the vacuum hose pinched or bent double to p r e ­
vent leakage through the hose, adjust vacuum so that
gauge reads
5.0 inches. Replace hose, then repeat
adjustment until reading returns to 5.0 each tim e the
hose is pinched.
