3. R em ove nuts fro m lo w e r brake band bracket adjust­
ing bolt, then rem o ve bolt.
4. R em ove " J " bolt by pushing up on bolt until it c le a rs
c le v is pin in brake cam.
5. Cut lock w ire , back o ff anchor adjusting s crew until
c le a r o f anchor.

Inspection
1. Exam ine braking su rface o f drum fo r roughness o r
scorin g.
If drum is w orn o r damaged, it must be
replaced as d irected la te r.
2. Inspect brake lining.

Relining
1. R em ove r iv e ts and lining fro m brake band and tho­
roughly clean band.
2. R ivets should be in stalled fro m cen ter, a ltern ately
working toward each end o f band.
3o Check lining to band a ir gap. A .010" fe e le r must not
en ter at any point.

Installation
1. P la ce band and lin in g assem bly o v e r brake drum.

2. In stall anchor s c re w through bracket and spring into
anchor.
In sert lo w e r brake band bracket adjusting
bolt through band lo w e r bracket and hole in support
and start nuts on bolt.
3. In stall new c le v is pin through operating cams and
link plate.
P osition operating cam s on top o f band
upper bracket with toe o f cam facin g forw ard.
4. In sert threaded end o f adjusting bolt down between
operating cam s.
Position hook toward re a r. As bolt
is low ered into place it must pass through band upper
bracket, upper r e le a s e spring, brake support lo w er
r e le a s e
spring,
and band
fla t w asher, adjusting nut, lock w asher, and lock nut
on adjusting bolt.
NOTE:
On
O rsch eln
tension spring is used.
5. Adjust parking brake as previo u sly co v ered under
Maintenance and Adjustment.
Brake Drum
Removal
1. Rem ove
brake band and lining assem bly as p r e ­
viou sly directed.
2. R em ove nuts and lock w ashers fro m bolts attaching
p ro p e lle r shaft U -jo in t flange and brake drum to
tran sm ission output shaft flange.

Rem ove
w ashers, and bolts attaching p r o p e lle r shaft center
bearing hanger b racket to cro ssm em b er.
Brake Shoe
Removal (Fig. 6 8 )
1. Rem ove two return springs and anchor pin link fro m
cam ends o f brake shoes. Spread ends o f brake shoes
fa r enough to p e rm it rem oval fro m support plate.
Rem ove shoes, then separate by rem ovin g adjusting
screw and adjusting sc re w spring.
2. Replace lining i f worn down close to r iv e t beads.

screw .
The drum and output shaft flange w ill be rem oved by
rem ovin g
the nut on the end o f the output shaft, then
pulling the assem bly fro m the spliner output shaft.
CAUTION:
Do not ham m er o r p ry drum during
rem oval.
4. Rem ove bolts and nuts fro m flange and drum a ssem ­
bly to separate drum and flange.
Installation
1. Wipe clean mating su rfaces of brake drum and out­
put shaft flan ge.
Line up brake drum and flange,
in sta ll bolts and nuts.
2. Slide drum and flange assem bly o v e r splin es onto
output shaft.
3. On jobs with parking brake drum assem bly attached
to output shaft by a cen ter bolt, place lock washer
and
special s e rra te d fla t w asher on bolt.
