3. Rem ove a ccessory d rive pulley then, if so equipped,
rem ove dam per retaining bolt.
4. Install T o o l J-6978 on dam per then, turning pu ller
screw , rem ove dam per (fig . 9V).
NOTE:
Tool J-6978 has holes form in g two pat­
terns. A two bolt and a three bolt pattern. The
holes fo r the two bolt pattern must be elongated
fo r use on the M ark IV V8 engines.
Installation
CAUTIO N:
torsional dam per is assem bled to the hub with
a rubber type m ateria l.

1. Coat front cover seal contact area (on dam per) with
engine oil.
2. Install dam per on crankshaft as follow s:
a. P la ce dam per in position o v e r key on crankshaft.
b. Pull torsion al damper onto crankshaft (fig. 10V)
as

c. On Mark IV engines use T o o l J-21058.
NOTE:
If radiator has not been rem oved from
the veh icle a l/ 2 "-2 0 x 5" bolt and a l/ 2 "-2 0
nut may be used in place o f the bolt and nut
from T o o l J -2 1058.
CAUTIO N:
ficien t thread engagement (min. 1/2").

7/16"-20 x 5" bolt and nut in place of bolt and
nut furnished with J - 2 1058.
e. R em ove tool from crankshaft then install damper
retaining bolt and torque to specifications.
3. Install a ccesso ry d rive pulley.
4. Install radiator and shroud as outlined in Section 13.
5. Install fan and pulley to w ater pump hub and tighten
secu rely.
6. Install fan belt and adjust to specification s using
strand tension gauge.
7.
F ill cooling system , start engine and check fo r leaks.
