c. Install sta rter and connect battery cable.
7. F ill with engine oil then start engine and check fo r
leaks.
O il Pump
Removal
1. R em ove o il pan as outlined.
2. R em ove two flange mounting bolts, pickup pipe bolt,
then rem ove pump and screen as an assem bly.
Installation
1. A lig n o il pump d rive shafts to match with distribu tor
tang, then install o il pump to block positioning flange
o v e r distribu tor low er bushing. Use no gasket.
NOTE: O il pump should slide ea sily into place,
i f not, rem ove and reposition slot to align with
d istribu tor tang.
2. Install o il pan as outlined.
O il Seal (Rear M a in )
Replacement
The re a r main bearing o il seal can be replaced (both
h a lves) without rem ova l o f the crankshaft.
NOTE: A lw ays rep la ce
seal as a unit. Install with the lip facing toward
the front o f the engine.
1. W ith the o il pan and o il pump rem oved, rem o ve the
r e a r main b earing cap.
2. R em ove o il seal fro m
fro m the bottom with a sm all s crew d r iv e r (fig . 5L).
3. Lu bricate the lip o f a new seal with engine o il. Keep
o il o ff the parting line surface as this is treated with
glue. In sert seal in cap and r o ll it into place with
fin ger and thumb, using light p ressu re so seal tangs
at parting line do
4. T o rem ove the upper half o f the seal, use a sm all
ham m er to tap a b ra ss pin punch on one end o f seal
until it protrudes fa r

a ham m er handle, w hile turning crankshaft, until
seal is ro lle d into place.

6. Apply s e a le r to cylin der block in seal area (fig. 7L).
7. Install the re a r main bearing cap (with new seal) and
torque to specification s.
Torsional Dam per
Removal
1. Drain radiator and
radiator.
2. R em ove radiator co re , as outlined in Section 13.
3. Rem ove fan b elt and (if so equipped) a c ce s so ry d rive
pulley and belt. If so equipped, rem ove retaining
bolt.
4. Install T o o l J-6978 to dam per and turn puller screw
to rem ove dam per
dam per.
Installation
CAUTION: The in ertia weight section o f the
torsion al dam per is assem bled to the hub with a
