1. Coat front seal contact area (on dam per) with engine
oil.
2. Install torsion al dam per as follow s:
D RIVE ON T Y P E (Without retaining bolt)
a. Attach dam per in s ta lle r T o o l J - 22197 to dam per.
Tighten fin g e rs o f tool to prevent in ertia weight
from m oving (fig . 9 L ).
b. P osition
dam per
position, using J-5590, until it bottom s against
crankshaft gea r (fig . 9 L ). Rem ove in s ta lle r tool.
P U L L ON T Y P E (With retaining bolt)
a. Use a 7/16"-20 x 4 " bolt, nut and washer to pull
torsion al dam per onto crankshaft.
CA UTIO N:
Install b olt in crankshaft with suf­
ficien t thread engagem ent (min. 1/2").
b. R em ove bolt, nut and washer and install retaining
bolt and torque to specifications.

3. Install fan belt and adjust using strand tension gauge.
4. If so equipped, install a c ces so ry d riv e pulley and
belt.
5. Install radiator co re as outlined in Section 13.
6. Connect radiator hoses.
7.
F ill cooling system and check fo r leaks.
Crankcase Front Cover
Removal
1. R em ove o il pan as outlined.
2. Rem ove
crankshaft
dam per as outlined.
3. R em ove
crankshaft
into
rem ove co v er and gasket.
Installation
1. Clean gasket surfaces on block and crankcase front
c o ver.
2. Install centering T o o l J-23042 in crankcase front
c o v e r seal (fig . 10L)„
3. Coat the gasket with gasket se a le r and place in p o s i­
tion on c o v er, then install crankcase front co ver to
block and torque to specifications.
4. R em ove centering tool.
NOTE:
It is im portant that centering tool be
used
to
align
crankshaft hub o r dam per installation w ill not
damage seal and to position seal to seal evenly
around the damper o r hub surface.
5. Install crankshaft hub and/or dam per as outlined.
6. Install o il pan as outlined.
O il Seal (Front Cover)
Replacement
W ith Cover R e m o v e d
1. W ith co ver rem oved, pry old seal out o f co v e r from
the front with a la rg e screw d r iv e r being carefu l not
to d istort c over.
2. Install new seal so that open end o f the seal is to­
w ard the inside o f co ver, and d riv e it into position
with T o o l J-23042 (fig . 11L).

Support co ve r at sealing a rea . (T o o l
J-971 may be used as support).
