2. Make sure inner b earing, o il seal, o il seal sleeve,
axle housing o il d e fle c to r, and inner bearin g race and
o il seal a re p ro p e rly positioned.
3. Install hub and drum assem bly on axle housing, e x e r ­
cisin g ca re so as not to damage o il seal o r dislocate
other internal components.
4. P la c e outer b earin g cone and r o lle r assem bly on
axle housing and p re s s fir m ly into hub (fig .
5. Install adjusting nut and tighten nut to specification s.
6. In stall nut lo ck and align nut so that a tang of the nut
w ill engage a fla t on the adjusting nut.
7. In stall locknut and torque to sp ecification s.

8. In stall wheel assem bly.
NOTE:
This wheel to brake drum fasten er is an
im portant attaching p a rt in that it could affect
the p erform an ce o f v ita l components and s y s ­
tem s, and/or could resu lt in m ajor r e p a ir e x ­
pense. It must be rep laced with one of the same
part number o r with an equivalent part if r e ­
placem ent
b ecom es necessary.

Eaton tw o-speed a xles are available in three Models
17201, 17221 (18,500) and 19201 (23,000).
A ll M odels are equipped with a sp ira l b evel ring gear
and pinion.
The two 18,500 lb. axles are the same except
fo r a la r g e r d riv e
g ea r diam eter on the 17221 Model.
The 23,000 lb. axle is s im ila r in construction to the
18,500 lb. shown in F igu re 80 but many components are
o f increased s ize to obtain the g re a te r capacity rating.
Maintenance and adjustments fo r the Eaton Two-Speed
axles are p erfo rm ed the same as those outlined fo r the

1. Disconnect p ro p e lle r shaft and rem ove pinion flange
and d eflecto r.
2. Rem ove bolts retaining the o il seal reta in er to c a r ­
r ie r , and withdraw retain er fro m pinion.
3. P ry old seal fro m bore, using care so as not to dam ­
age machined surface of retain er.
4. Thoroughly clean a ll fo reig n m atter fro m seal con­
tact area in reta in er.
5. Pack the cavity between the seal lip s with a high-
m elting
point
bearing
suitable
in sta ller
in sta ller d rive su rface.
6. P r e s s
seal into reta in er until it bottoms against
shoulder.
7. C arefu lly position seal reta in er o v e r pinion to p r e ­
vent damage to seal, and torque retaining bolts to
specification s.
8. R ein sta ll pinion flange and p ro p e lle r shaft.
NOTE:
This
p ro p e lle r shaft to pinion flange
fasten er is an im portant attaching part in that it
could a ffect the perform an ce o f v ita l components
and
system s,
re p a ir expense. It must be replaced with one of
the same part number o r with an equivalent part
i f replacem ent becom es necessary. Do not use a
replacem ent part of le s s e r quality o r substitute
design.
Torque values must be used as specified
during reassem bly to assure p ro p er retention of
this part.
