4. Using T o o l J-5892 to com p ress the va lv e spring,
rem o ve the va lve locks, va lve cap (o r rotator) and
va lve spring and dam per (fig . 4 V ).
5. R em ove the va lve stem o il seal.
6. A ssem b le as follow s:
Sm all V8 Engines
a„ Set the valve spring and dam per, va lve shield and
v a lve cap (or -rotator) in place. The c lose coiled
end o f the spring is installed against the cylin der
head. C om p ress the spring with T o o l J-5892 and
install o il seal in the lo w er g ro o ve o f the stem ,
making sure the seal is flat and not twisted.
NQTE:
A light coat o f o il on the seal w ill help
p revent twisting.

in the upper groove of the va lve stem .
NOTE:
G rease may be used to hold the locks in
place while relea sin g the com p ressor tool.
M ark IV V8 Engines
a. Install new valve stem o il seal (coated with o il)
in position over va lve guide.
b. Set the rotator (exhaust v a lv e ), va lve spring and
dam per and valve cap in place,
c.
C om press the spring with T o o l J-5892 and install
the va lve locks then relea se the c om p ressor tool,
making sure the locks seat p ro p e rly in the gro o ve
of the va lve stem.
NOTE:
G rease may be used to hold the locks
in place while re lea sin g the c o m p ressor tool.
7. Install spark plug, using a new gasket on 13/16"
plugs and torque to specifications.

Cylinder Head Assembly
Removal
1. R em ove intake m anifold as outlined.
2. Rem ove exhaust m anifolds as outlined.
3. R em ove va lve mechanism as outlined.
4. D rain cylinder block o f coolant.
5. R em ove cylin der head bolts, cylin d er head and g a s ­
ket.
P la ce
cylin der head on two blocks o f wood to
prevent damage.
Installation
CA UTIO N:
The gaskets su rfaces on both the
head and the block must be clean o f any foreign
m atter and fre e
o f nicks or heavy scratch es.
Cylinder bolt threads in the block and threads on
the cylinder head bolts must be clean. (D irt w ill
a ffec t bolt torque).
1. On engines using a S T E E L gasket, coat both sides of
a new gasket with a good se a le r. Spread the sea le r
thin and even.
One method o f applying the sea ler
that w ill assure the p rop er coat is with the use o f a
paint r o lle r . T oo much se a le r may hold the gasket
away from the head or block.
CAUTIO N:
Use no se a le r on engines using a
com position S T E E L ASBESTOS gasket.
2. P la c e the gasket in position o v e r the dowel pins with
the bead up.
3. C arefu lly guide the cylin der head into place o v e r the
dowel pins and gasket.
4. Coat
threads
o f cylin der head bolts with sealing
compound and install bolts fin g er tight.
5. Tighten each cylin der head bolt a little at a tim e in
the sequence shown in the torque sequence chart until
the sp ecified torque is reached.
6. Install exhaust m anifolds as outlined.
7. Install intake m anifold as outlined.
8. Install
